If you’re not using your timeline as an extra place to advertise your art website, you’re wasting valuable advertising real estate. You’ve now got the fantastic option to add a cover image at the top of your timeline. You can still add a small profile photograph, but the main photograph at the top is now known as a cover. These cover images are public, so anyone visiting your timeline can see it. Although none of the links are clickable, you’ll still have your website address there, so it’s worth doing.
At the time of writing this, the timeline cover image is currently only available on your Facebook profile and not your business page. Facebook may roll this out for pages in time but for now we might as well make the most of the free advertising spot on our profiles!
You don’t have to be an expert in photoshop these days, although it’s great if you are! You can easily use a free image editing site like Picnik.
If you are an expert in photoshop and you already have a brand with images, then you’ll easily be able to create a great cover. Just make sure you include the address to your website. Make your image at least 720 pixels wide and roughly 310 pixels high.
To add a cover image to your timeline:
- Go to your timeline
- Click Add a Cover
- Choose whether you want to upload a new photo or pick a photo from one of your existing photo albums
- Once you choose a photo, you can reposition it by clicking on the image and dragging it up or down
- Click Save
If you’re more of an artist and less of a designer, and the thought of Photoshop makes you squirm, no problem. We’re going to do it the easy way!
Head on over to Picnik.com and start by uploading a photograph. If you have a great photograph of your art, you can use that and add your website or blog address in Picnik. Try to find a landscape sized piece, rather than portrait because the image you select for your cover has to be at least 720 pixels wide. Facebook doesn’t give you a height limit but my cover image is actually 844 pixels wide x 309 pixels high and that seems to fit nicely as you can see in the screenshot above.
You don’t need to create an account with picnik to use it. Just click the ‘Get Started Now’ button in the middle of the screen.
Then click the upload photo button:
Then follow the steps in the screenshot from 1 to 7.
Once you click save and share, follow the steps in the screenshot from 1 to 3.
Save the image to your computer.
Now all you need to do, is add the cover to your timeline and you’re all done! I hope you’re happy with your new cover!
